A Goodwill Recap:  In little more than the last twelve months, the analytical community has seen goodwill go from being a non-deductible tax item to an occasionally deductible one, and witnessed an increased frequency in the write-offs of goodwill balances - with more of them likely to come. There has been a story circulating about heightened acquisitions activity by foreign companies due to differences in their accounting for goodwill, and in any regard, there's been a general increase in merger and acquisition activity - which frequently leads to new goodwill balances and raises questions about what the resulting entity will look like. Given these events and the confusion that they can create for analysts, now would be a good time to pull over to the side of the road and get out the goodwill road map.
