Divining 1994 Derivatives Disclosures: The Dow Jones Industrial Companies:  Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 119 requires more detailed information about the use of derivative financial instruments for all reporting entities - not just dealers in such instruments, like banks and brokerage firms. Given that some of the most startling events of the past year related to non-financial institutions, it would be wise for analysts to understand more about how such firms use these instruments and to interpret the disclosures they make. A survey of the companies comprising the Dow Jones Industrial Index demonstrates some of the uses analysts may have for the new disclosures.
