What Keeps The SEC Busy - 1997: Every year in Washington, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants presents its national conference on current SEC developments. Many of the speakers are members of the SEC staff, and that's the basis for one of the conference's attractions for accounting practitioners: they get first-hand knowledge of the kinds of issues with which the SEC has been dealing in the past year. It's valuable information for practitioners to possess as they dive into the audits of clients during the annual reporting season. Analysts would do well to understand the issues covered at the conference. Why? If for no other reason, they cannot fail to be impressed by the ingenuity and imagination of some managements in presenting financial history in the fashion that best suits their purpose. Presented here are some highlights of issues discussed at December's conference by members of the SEC's Office of the Chief Accountant, the Division of Corporate Finance and others.
